GSM is one of the first specifications buyers should check when purchasing polyester lining for garment production. It refers to the weight of the fabric per square metre and gives you an indication of how substantial the material is. However, choosing the highest GSM available is not automatically the right decision. A heavier material can add unnecessary bulk to a lightweight garment, while a very light option may not provide the finish or feel required for a structured piece. The right choice depends on the garment, outer fabric and final result you want.

For example, formal suits and structured garments may require a more substantial construction, while lightweight blazers and outerwear may benefit from a lighter option. The same weight can also feel different depending on the weave and finish. This is why GSM should never be considered separately from construction. Ask your supplier for the exact weight range and compare it with a physical sample. Place the sample against your outer fabric and check whether the combination moves naturally. You can also sew a small section to see whether the material behaves properly during production.

For bulk orders, consistency is just as important as selecting the correct number. Once you've approved a particular GSM, make sure the specification is clearly mentioned in your purchase order. Check the delivered rolls against the agreed details, particularly when the material will be used across a large production run. Keeping a record of the approved specification can also make future purchasing easier. Instead of treating GSM as a simple quality score, use it as a practical measurement that helps you select a suitable weight for the garment you are actually manufacturing.
